The move comes after Talaat Youssef resigned following a 2-0 loss to El Gouna in the first round of the league’s final phase. Abdel-Aaty becomes Ittihad’s third coach this season, after brief spells under Nikodimos Papavasiliou and Youssef.
His tenure begins with a League Cup match against Haras El Hodood on 23 March at Alexandria Stadium, before shifting focus to the club’s league survival campaign. Ittihad currently sit fifth in the relegation group with 18 points, six points behind group leaders ZED FC, Abdel-Aaty's former club.
Abdel-Aaty, 49, has established himself as a promotion specialist, having led ZED FC to the top flight before guiding them to the Egyptian Cup final for the first time in the club’s history. During his tenure at ZED FC, he recorded 22 wins, 21 draws, and 17 losses in 60 matches.
A former coach of Aswan SC and Pharco FC, Abdel-Aaty is no stranger to Ittihad, having served as an assistant coach under Mokhtar Mokhtar between 2016 and 2017.
Ittihad’s struggles in the league have been pronounced, with Youssef managing just two wins in 10 matches before stepping down. His tenure also included five defeats, leaving the team in a precarious position.
