Egypt condemns Israeli airstrikes on Gaza as blatant ceasefire violation

Ahram Online , Tuesday 18 Mar 2025

Egypt condemned the Israeli airstrikes overnight on the Gaza Strip as a "blatant violation” of the ceasefire agreement - brokered by Egypt, Qatar, and the US - the initial phase of which took effect on 19 January and expired on 1 March, according to a Ministry of Foreign Affairs statement on Tuesday.

The Israeli attacks represent a "dangerous escalation which threatens to bring serious consequences for the stability of the region," read the statement.

Overnight attacks, which the Gaza health ministry said resulted in the deaths of 413 Palestinians and left over 500 wounded, marked the most violent breach of the truce by Israel.

Cairo reiterated its firm rejection of all Israeli assaults on Gaza intended to reignite regional tensions and hinder de-escalation efforts, the statement added.

Moreover, Egypt called on the international community to act immediately to halt the Israeli aggression on Gaza and prevent the region from falling into another cycle of violence.

On Tuesday, Israel vowed to continue its assault on the strip until all its captives are returned.

In response, Hamas accused Israel of choosing to "resume war" following a deadlock in truce extension talks and warned that renewed fighting could be a "death sentence" for its captives.

Additionally, Egypt urged all relevant parties to show restraint and allow mediators to continue working toward securing a lasting ceasefire.

The first phase of the Gaza ceasefire essentially paused a genocidal Israeli war on Gaza that broke out on 7 October 2023. During this phase, Hamas released 33 captives, including eight dead bodies, while Israel freed around 1,800 Palestinian detainees.

Since then, Hamas has pushed for negotiations on a second phase, while Israel sought to extend the first phase until mid-April, demanding Gaza's "total demilitarization" and the removal of Hamas while providing no guarantees to end the genocidal war permanently.
