Mother’s Day is a cherished occasion that allows us to honour the women who nurture, guide, and support us. This year, it coincides with Ramadan, a sacred month of fasting, reflection, and devotion for Muslims around the world. While balancing both occasions can require thoughtfulness, it can also present a unique opportunity to express love and appreciation in ways that align with the spirit of Ramadan.
By showing gratitude to our mothers, we not only honour them but also cultivate a sense of compassion, empathy, and love that extends beyond our families to the broader community. Combining Mother’s Day with Ramadan can remind us that love and appreciation don’t always require grand gestures. Sometimes, the simplest acts like prayer, kindness, and quality time can carry the deepest meaning.
While traditional Mother’s Day celebrations often involve dining out or giving gifts, Ramadan invites a more heartfelt and spiritual approach. Here are some meaningful ways to honour mothers while embracing the essence of the holy month.
Prepare a special Iftar:
For many mothers, cooking is a labour of love, but on this special day, give her the chance to rest while you take over the kitchen. Prepare her favourite dishes for Iftar—the meal that breaks the fast at sunset. You can add a personal touch by setting the table beautifully or creating a cosy family atmosphere with candles and fresh flowers.
Give a charity gift in her name:
Ramadan emphasises generosity and kindness. Instead of material gifts, consider donating to a cause that is dear to your mother’s heart, whether it’s supporting orphans, feeding the needy, or funding education for underprivileged children. This act of giving will not only make her proud but also bring immense spiritual rewards.
Spend quality time together:
With the busy schedules of modern life, quality time is often the most precious gift. After Iftar, sit together for tea, share stories, or reminisce over old photograph albums. A simple, heartfelt conversation can mean more to a mother than an elaborate celebration.
Gift her something meaningful:
Instead of extravagant presents, choose something thoughtful that aligns with Ramadan’s values. A beautifully bound Quran, a personalised prayer mat, or a book of Islamic reflections can make a meaningful gift. If she enjoys self-care, consider skincare products or a handmade journal for her thoughts and prayers.
Offer a special duaa for her:
One of the most touching ways to show appreciation is through duaa (an act of worship asking or begging Allah for something earnestly or humbly). During this sacred month, make a heartfelt duaa for your mother, asking for her health, happiness, and a place in Jannah (Paradise). If she is no longer with you, dedicate special prayers and acts of charity in her memory.
By celebrating Mother’s Day in a way that embraces the value of Ramadan, we can create meaningful moments that strengthen our bonds and deepen our appreciation for the love and sacrifices of our mothers.
