Cairo reiterated its vehement rejection of all forms of terrorism and violence that threaten Somalia’s security and stability.
The Al Shabaab militant group claimed responsibility for the bomb attack on Somalia’s presidential convoy, which struck shortly after President Mohamud left the presidential palace en route to Mogadishu’s main airport.
Although Al Shabaab frequently conducts attacks in Somalia, this marks the first attack on Mohamud since 2014, when the group bombed a hotel he was speaking at during his first term.
Presidential adviser Zakariye Hussein confirmed that Mohamud was unharmed, posting on X that the president was "good and well on his way to the front lines."
Hours later, state media aired images of Mohamud in the Adan Yabal district of Somalia’s Middle Shabelle region, where government forces are battling a three-week-old Al Shabaab offensive.
Egypt expressed full solidarity with Somalia, offering condolences to the government, the people, and the victims’ families, and wishing the injured a swift recovery.
