Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan believes Mohamed Salah’s time to lift the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) has arrived, as the team targets continental success and World Cup qualification.

Egypt, drawn in Group B alongside South Africa, Angola, and Zimbabwe, last won AFCON in 2010 but finished as runners-up in 2017 and 2021. Hassan, a three-time AFCON champion as a player, is determined to replicate that success as a coach.

"Winning AFCON after a long absence would be fantastic for this outstanding generation. Reaching the World Cup and advancing would be even more special, showcasing the team’s performance and bringing joy to Egyptian fans," he said.

Egypt leads the African World Cup Qualifying Group A by four points with six matches remaining.

Salah, 32, has contributed 44 goals for Liverpool this season — more than any player in Europe’s top five leagues. Omar Marmoush joined Manchester City from Eintracht Frankfurt in January and has 28 goal contributions so far.

"The presence of Salah and Marmoush in top clubs strengthens the national team. They will face pressure in AFCON, but they are experienced and capable of handling it," Hassan said.

Hassan views Marmoush, 26, as crucial for the team’s future.

"Marmoush has worked hard in Europe and earned his move to one of the biggest clubs. His hat-trick against Newcastle gave him even more confidence," he said.

Salah, with 57 international goals, is closing in on Hassan’s all-time Egypt record of 68.

"If Salah breaks my record, I’ll be the first to congratulate him. His success benefits the entire team," Hassan said.

Hassan expressed support for Salah, whose Liverpool contract expires at the end of the season amid speculation over a move to Saudi Arabia.

"He is a great player and will handle this situation well. I wish him success wherever he goes, as he is the best ambassador for Egypt," he said.

Egypt begins its AFCON campaign on 21 December with high expectations for immediate success and long-term progress.
