Egypt has put forward a bridging proposal to restore the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, a Palestinian official told Reuters Friday, noting that Hamas had yet to respond.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, did not disclose details of the Egyptian mediation plan, stating the proposal was still under consideration.

According to Reuters, Egypt has suggested setting a timeline for the release of the remaining Israeli captives alongside a deadline for a full Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, backed by US guarantees.

The US has signalled initial approval, Reuters reported, citing two Egyptian security sources.

Since Tuesday, Israel has been carrying out a series of airstrikes on Gaza, resulting in the deaths of over 700 Palestinians and injuring around 900, the majority of whom were women and children.

Egypt and several other nations denounced the Israeli strikes, calling them a clear violation of the ceasefire agreement, which was mediated by Egypt, Qatar, and the US on 15 January.

The first phase of the agreement, implemented between 19 January and 1 March, saw Hamas release 33 captives, including eight deceased individuals, while Israel freed around 1,800 Palestinian prisoners.

Since then, Hamas has been pushing for negotiations on a second phase

However, Israel attempted to extend the first phase until mid-April while disregarding calls to move forward with the next stage.

Instead, Israel has insisted on Gaza’s full demilitarisation and the removal of Hamas but has refused to commit to a permanent end to the war.
