Israel's opposition leader on Saturday called for a general strike if Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu refuses to abide by the Supreme Court's decision freezing its dismissal of the internal security chief.

If the government "decides to disobey the Court's decision it will become a government outside of the law," Yair Lapid told thousands of demonstrators in Tel Aviv. "If that happens, the entire country should stop."

For his part, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that Israel will remain a democratic state despite the government sacking the internal security chief, as thousands protested in Tel Aviv against his decision.

"Ronen Bar will not stay as head of Shin Bet. There will not be a civil war, and Israel will remain a democratic state," Netanyahu said in a video message, a day after the Supreme Court froze the government's bid to fire Bar, prompting the premier to insist that the government decides who heads Shin Bet.
