Egypt’s FM discusses efforts to de-escalate tensions in eastern DRC with Congolese counterpart

Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Badr Abdelatty discussed the latest developments in the ongoing crisis in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) on Thursday in a phone call with his Congolese counterpart, Thérèse Kayikwamba Wagner.

According to the Egyptian Foreign Ministry, Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt’s full support for all peaceful initiatives aimed at achieving stability and securing a comprehensive and lasting resolution to the conflict in eastern DRC.

The ministers reviewed the outcomes of the recent Doha meeting and the agreed-upon implementation steps, as well as the ministerial meeting between the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the East African Community (EAC) held on 17 March in Harare..

The meeting resulted in agreements on a ceasefire, cessation of hostilities, and the establishment of a secretariat to oversee the implementation of decisions.

Abdelatty welcomed efforts to de-escalate tensions and commended the decisions made during the joint virtual summit between the EAC and SADC on 24 March, which aimed to advance the peace process through the appointment of a team of five facilitators to guide the political track.

The two ministers also reviewed the overall state of bilateral relations and explored ways to strengthen existing partnerships.

They agreed to activate joint cooperation mechanisms that serve the shared interests of both nations, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said.
