The first quarter-million increase after 107 million was recorded on 13 January, taking 72 days, while the next quarter-million took 82 days.

The data shows a slower pace towards the next million milestone compared to previous increases. From February to November 2024, it took 268 days for Egypt’s population to rise from 106 million to 107 million, slower than typical one-million increases, which took 245-250 days.

Egypt’s birth rate fell below two million annually in 2024 for the first time since 2007. In response, the country has launched campaigns to curb its rapid population growth.

In 2024, Egypt saw an average of 164,028 births per month—5,378 per day, 224 per hour, and 3.73 per minute, or one birth every 16 seconds.

The total fertility rate also declined to 2.41 in 2024 from 2.54 in 2023.

As the world’s 14th most populous country, Egypt continues to spend millions on subsidized birth control.

CAPMAS data also shows Cairo Governorate leads with 10.4 million residents, followed by Giza (9.7 million) and Sharqiya (8.1 million). Other top ten governorates include Dakahliya (7.2 million), Beheira (7 million), Minya (6.5 million), and Qalyoubia (6.3 million). Sohag recorded 5.9 million, Alexandria 5.6 million, Gharbiya 5.5 million, and Assiut 5.2 million.

Menoufiya had 4.8 million, Fayoum 4.2 million, Kafr El Sheikh 3.8 million, Qena 3.7 million, and Beni Suef 3.7 million.

The least populous governorates were Aswan (1.7 million), Damietta (1.6 million), Ismailia (1.5 million), and Luxor (1.4 million).

Suez had 806,600, Port Said 800,000, Marsa Matrouh 579,600, North Sinai 469,000, the Red Sea 413,400, the New Valley 272,800, and South Sinai 118,200.
