Ahram Online highlights a selection of do-not-miss events this week, from 9 to 16 April in Cairo.

Multiple Theatre Space Festival

Running from 7 to 15 April, the festival features performances at the Sayed Darwish Theatre, Nihad Selaiha Theatre, Tharwat Okasha and Saad Ardash halls at the Institute of Theatrical Arts, the open court at the Academy of Arts, and other venues.

In its inaugural edition, the Multiple Theatre Space Festival aims to provide a platform for artists to present their work and compete before theatre academics and specialists.

Each festival day features two to four plays performed by Egyptian troupes.

New Films in Cinemas

Thursday, 10 April, sees the release of several new films in cinemas across Egypt:

  • Mickey 17, starring Robert Pattinson, Steven Yeun, and Naomi Ackie
  • Inheritance, starring Rhys Ifans, Phoebe Dynevor, Ciara Baxendale, and Kersti Bryan
  • The Amateur, starring Rami Malek, Rachel Brosnahan, Jon Bernthal, and Laurence Fishburne
  • Screamboat, starring Tyler Posey, David Howard Thornton, and Jesse Kove
  • Bloat, starring Ben McKenzie and Bojana Novakovic

AUC Tahrir CultureFest
10–12 April
AUC Tahrir Campus, Cairo

The festival's second edition features book talks, panel discussions, performances, concerts, exhibitions, a bazaar, children's activities, and a food fair.

Egyptian rapper Marwan Pablo performs on 10 April.

The festival showcases the arts of different cultures through a diverse lineup of participants.

Featured performers include the Egyptian-German band Cairo Steps, the Egyptian choir CaPop, the Palestinian youth choir Salute to Gaza, and more.

Strawberry Swing – Music
Thursday 10 April, 8 pm

Formed in 2016, Strawberry Swing is a tribute band covering the music of the world-famous group Coldplay.

By 2020, they had performed more than 90 shows across Egypt.

The band was founded by Abdelrahman Sherif, who serves as lead vocalist, acoustic guitarist, and keyboardist.

Mohamed Tarek Al-Khaleel (guitar and keyboard), Patrick Khalil (drums), and Guy (bass guitar) are the other members.

Mohamed Helmy – Stand-Up Comedy
Thursday 10 April & Saturday 12 April, 8 pm
Theatro Arkan, Sheikh Zayed City, Cairo

Mohamed Helmy began his stand-up career in Alexandria in 2016 and has since performed internationally, including in North America in July 2024.

In 2018, he founded HelmyMan Events, a company that organizes comedy gigs and offers a creative platform for emerging stand-up comedians.

 

 

Amr Selim – Music

Renowned pianist Amr Selim is known for his classical performances, blending Arabic and Western pieces.

Abu Shaar Brothers – Music
Friday 11 April, 8 pm
El-Sawy Culturewheel, Wisdom Hall, 26th of July Street, Zamalek, Cairo

Formed in 1983, the Abu Shaar Brothers began as a Syrian quartet performing Islamic chants praising the Prophet Mohamed.

The youngest member was just 11 years old at the time. Over the years, new generations joined the ensemble.

Known as El-Ikhwa Abu Shaar, they became internationally recognized for their religious repertoire.

Now based in Egypt, they enjoy a large following across the Arab world, with over 600,000 followers on platforms like Facebook and Instagram.

Manal Mohie El-Din – Music

Cairo Opera House, Open Air Theatre, Zamalek, Cairo

Manal Mohie El-Din, Egypt's leading harpist, will perform audience favorites arranged for her ensemble.

Her artistic career spans years of international and local performances, including solo recitals and collaborations with major Egyptian orchestras such as the Cairo Symphony Orchestra, the Cairo Opera Orchestra, and the Cairo Festival Orchestra.

Somaya Darwesh – Music

Somaya Darwesh is an Egyptian singer who released her debut album in 2007.

She also performed theme songs for films, including Bank Statement (2007) and Flashpoint (2008).

Ahmad Ali El-Haggar – Music

Room Art Space & Café, 10 Etehad Al-Mohamin Street, Garden City

Egyptian singer, songwriter, and producer Ahmad Ali El-Haggar performs with Ahmed Kamary on qanun, Sika on bass, and Azeema on drums and percussion.

Son of the renowned singer Ali El-Haggar, Ahmad fuses traditional music with jazz and neo-soul influences.

He has become a leading figure among young independent musicians and has shared stages with artists such as Carole King, Jason Mraz, and Melissa Etheridge.

His debut album was released in May 2020.

Sohbet Al-Semsemiya – Music
Sunday 13 April, 9 pm
Rawabet Art Space, 5 Hussein Basha Al-Meamari, Downtown Cairo

The Sohbet Al-Semsemiya troupe performs the traditional art of Semsemiya, combining dance and music.

The Semsemiya is a beloved instrument in the cities of Ismailia, Suez, and Port Said.

Cassette 90 Band – Music
Tuesday 15 April, 8 pm
Room Art Space, New Cairo

The eight-member Cassette 90 band revives 1990s Egyptian pop, performing songs by artists like Mostafa Amar, Hisham Abbas, Alaa Abdel-Khaleq, and Ehab Tawfik.
