The National Food Safety Authority (NFSA) ordered Friday the temporary closure of several food chains due to the detection of pathogenic bacteria in products intended for market circulation, following lab tests prompted by consumer complaints of food poisoning.

The tests also proved that several products of well-known food chains, including B Laban, Karam El-Sham, Konafa w Basbosa, Wahmy Burger, and 3am Shaltat,  contained internationally banned food colourings, while others were improperly stored, increasing the risk of spoilage and altering their properties.

The NFSA said in a statement that the bacteria found in these products, which primarily affect the digestive system, are the reason behind the cases of food poisoning.

According to the statement, the Authority inspected over 47 outlets and confiscated and destroyed unfit food products. It urged food businesses to comply with safety standards, warning that inspections would intensify and violations would be strictly dealt with.

In addition, the statement called on consumers to report any observations or complaints via the official channels, including the electronic portal of the Unified Government Complaints System, NFSA's official website, and the Consumer Protection Agency Hotline (19588).
