Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States
Aboul Gheit described the Pope as “a unique voice for humanity and conscience,” particularly at a time when such values are increasingly under threat.
In a statement issued by the Arab League’s General Secretariat, the late pontiff was praised for his unwavering advocacy for peace and coexistence, which the League said served as a lasting example of religious tolerance and a commitment to bridging divides.
The statement particularly referenced Pope Francis’s final Easter sermon, in which he highlighted the ongoing suffering in Gaza, describing the “terrible conflict” that continues to bring death and destruction, leading to a “horrific and shameful humanitarian situation.”
The Pope called for an immediate ceasefire and urged for aid to be sent to the people of Gaza, who he said were “starving and yearning for a future of peace.”
The Arab League’s tribute emphasized the Pope’s unwavering support for humanity, irrespective of religion, and noted his consistent, compassionate stance on the Palestinian issue.
It recalled the Pope’s direct communication with the people of Gaza, offering support and solidarity during the Israeli genocide, through hundreds of calls to those affected.
The statement also acknowledged Pope Francis's unflinching condemnation of Israeli brutality, which he continued to voice until the very end, despite efforts to silence critics.
His firm position, grounded in the values of divine religions that call for peace and denounce aggression, was highlighted as a beacon of courage.
Furthermore, the Arab League praised the Pope’s stance on refugees, regardless of their faith or the country they fled from, recognizing his support for those escaping conflict and death as an inspiration to many around the world.
