The Egyptian foreign ministry hailed the move as "encouraging progress" towards building trust and fostering regional peace in the Great Lakes region and across Africa.

Egypt commended both countries' commitment to resolving differences peacefully, easing tensions and opening doors for cooperation and joint development, benefiting their people and the wider region.

The foreign ministry statement, released Saturday, reiterated Egypt's support for peaceful dispute resolution in Africa, in line with international law and the African Union's principles, contributing to regional and international security.

It also highlighted Cairo's efforts to support de-escalation and advance peaceful settlements between the two nations through dialogue, noting recent calls between President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi and the presidents of Rwanda and the DRC.

Egypt affirmed its ongoing commitment to supporting the settlement process and coordinating with regional partners to reach a lasting and comprehensive peace agreement.

The mineral-rich eastern Congo has been ripe with conflict since the 1994 Rwandan genocide.

The crisis surged in recent months with M23 rebels, reportedly backed by Rwanda, making new advances into the cities of Goma and Bukavu.
