Lourenço’s visit aims to strengthen bilateral relations between Egypt and Angola and enhance joint cooperation within the framework of the AU.
The two leaders are also expected to discuss regional peace and security across the African continent.
Both Egypt and Angola are member states of the AU, a 55-nation body established in 2002 as the successor to the Organization of African Unity (OAU), which operated from 1963 to 1999.
Ties between the two nations date back decades, notably to Egypt’s support for Angola’s liberation movement during the 1960s under the leadership of then-President Gamal Abdel-Nasser.
In 1965, the People's Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) established its first regional office in Cairo.
Angola went on to open an embassy in the Egyptian capital in 1976 following its independence.
