BRICS foreign ministers commended Egypt’s ongoing efforts to restore a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and rally international backing for the Arab-Islamic plan, prepared by Cairo, for the reconstruction of the war-devastated territory.

The statement came during the BRICS Foreign Ministers' Meeting, held on 28–29 April in Brazil, which currently holds the group’s rotating presidency.

Egypt was represented by Ambassador Ragy El-Etreby, Personal Representative of President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi, who attended on behalf of Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty, according to a foreign ministry statement on Wednesday.

During the meeting, Egypt reaffirmed its call for an immediate end to the Israeli war on the occupied Palestinian territories (OPT), emphasized the need for uninterrupted humanitarian aid to Gaza, and rejected any attempts to forcibly displace the native Palestinian population from their land.

Cairo also condemned ongoing Israeli violations in Lebanon and Syria and reiterated the importance of joint international action to address escalating regional crises.

El-Etreby underscored Egypt’s longstanding demand for reforming global governance structures to make them more responsive and equitable—particularly by strengthening the representation of developing nations in multilateral institutions.

Originally formed in 2006 by Brazil, Russia, India, and China—with South Africa joining in 2011—BRICS expanded in 2024–25 to include six new members, including Egypt.

The bloc now represents 41 percent of the global population, 24 percent of global GDP, and over 16 percent of world trade, according to the World Bank.

The ministers agreed on the need to scale up development financing to help developing nations, especially in Africa, meet the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

El-Etreby noted that Egypt's participation in BRICS aligns with its national development priorities.

He highlighted areas of focus including trade, industrial cooperation, investment, and stronger links between BRICS business communities—building on key decisions from last year’s summit in Russia.

“These areas align closely with Egypt’s national priorities in advancing its economic and social development agenda,” El-Etreby stated.
