On 7 May, Ambassador of Japan to Egypt IWAI Fumio and Board Head of the Future Girls Association for Society Development Zeinab Mekkey witnessed the successful completion of the Japanese KUSANONE (Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Projects) project.

The project started in February 2024, when the Japanese embassy in Egypt extended a $60,000 grant to the Future Girls Association for Society Development to provide safe access to water, reduce health risks linked to water pollution, and improve living conditions in the El-Ayyat area.

The water stations will supply 24,000 litres of purified water daily, reaching approximately 2,400 families in El-Ayyat.

During the signing ceremony, Ambassador Fumio expressed his pleasure at the project's successful completion and his appreciation for Future Girls Association Development’s efforts to make it a reality.

The ambassador of Japan, IWAI Fumio, and Zeinab Mekkey, the Board Head of the Future Girls Association for Society, open the water stations.

"These new water purification stations will provide clean water to thousands of people, significantly improving their health and well-being," Mekky said.

"We are incredibly grateful for the support of the Japanese government and the KUSANONE programme. Studies show that 69 percent of residents in this area suffer from kidney and intestinal diseases due to impure water," she added.

Mekky explained that these new stations will make a real difference in the lives of the people there, providing a sustainable source of clean water for generations to come.

The Japanese government offers various Official Development Assistance (ODA) programmes to address the diverse needs of developing countries.

Among these is the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP or KUSANONE), which supports small-scale initiatives that benefit local communities and contribute to socio-economic development.

The KUSANONE programme began in Egypt in 1994. As of March 2024, it has provided over $10 million in funding for 179 projects in the country in collaboration with 129 local NGOs.

These projects span key sectors such as education, healthcare, water and sanitation, vocational training, women’s empowerment, and support for individuals with special needs.
