Egypt and Qatar are facilitating a new round of negotiations between the US and Hamas aimed at securing the release of captives held in Gaza and achieving a broader ceasefire agreement, according to Axios.

The talks in Doha are being led by US Special Envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff, who has reportedly submitted a partial-truce proposal to Hamas through the mediators.

Israeli media sources say the offer involves the release of 10 Israeli captives based on criteria previously discussed in earlier rounds of negotiations.

In exchange, the proposal includes a 70-day pause in fighting, during which both sides would work toward finalising a comprehensive agreement.

According to Israeli media, Hamas announced that it will release Israeli captive Idan Alexander within 48 hours.

The mediation efforts come as pressure mounts for a diplomatic breakthrough in the ongoing Gaza war, with Egypt and Qatar playing a key role in facilitating dialogue between the parties.

Israel unilaterally ended the last ceasefire, which lasted two months, on March 18, launching a major offensive in Gaza and ramping up its bombardment of the territory.

It has also cut off all aid to Gaza, saying it would pressure Hamas to release the remaining captives.

Hamas has continued to insist on a deal that ends the war as agreed upon previously.

Indirect talks held over the past few weeks yielded no progress in the negotiations.
