"The (Ezzedine) Al-Qassam Brigades have just released the Zionist soldier and American citizen Edan Alexander, following contacts with the US administration, as part of the efforts undertaken by mediators to achieve a ceasefire," Hamas said in a statement.

Israeli American Edan Alexander, 21, was captured in October 2023.

After growing up in New Jersey, Alexander enlisted and joined the Israeli occupation army, specifically the Golani brigade at age 18.

The Israeli soldier is being released as part of Hamas' efforts to pursue a ceasefire deal, while partaking in negotiations with the United States to end the the Israeli genocidal war on the Palestinian Strip.

After the first announcement of intentions to release Alexander, US President Donald Trump hailed the "monumental news" in a post on social media, describing it as a "good faith gesture".
