The Korean Cultural Centre (KCC) in Egypt brought its travelling cultural caravan to Port Said this week, offering residents a hands-on introduction to Korean traditions, language and family customs.

Hosted at the Misr Public Library, the event featured workshops, performances, and exhibitions designed to engage local audiences outside Cairo.

It marks the second stop in a nationwide outreach programme as South Korea and Egypt commemorate 30 years of diplomatic relations.

The Korean Culture Caravan included Hanbok dress-up experiences.

Visitors tried on traditional Hanbok clothing, practiced Korean calligraphy, and participated in craft workshops, where they created symbolic carnations for Parents’ Day, a Korean holiday held on 8 May.

Attendees also sampled Korean food, explored folk games such as Tuho (arrow tossing), and watched Korean films.

Exhibits included traditional musical instruments, handmade Hanji paper, and cultural items reflecting daily and ceremonial life in Korea.

A live performance of Gugak, or traditional Korean music, was also held.

May is widely referred to in South Korea as “Family Month”, encompassing Children’s Day (5 May), Parents’ Day (8 May), and Teacher’s Day (15 May).

Carnations are typically given to parents as tokens of appreciation, with the flower’s colour indicating family status.

“Port Said, with its legacy as a global crossroads, was the perfect setting to host the Caravan. We hope it contributes to strengthening cultural exchange and mutual understanding between our two countries,” said Oh Sung-ho, Director of the KCC in Egypt.

The centre plans to expand the caravan to additional cities in the coming months, alongside a series of events marking the diplomatic anniversary.
