UNIDROIT is an intergovernmental organization aiming to harmonize private international law across countries through uniform rules, international conventions, and the production of model laws and guidelines.
It was established in 1926 as part of the League of Nations and comprises 65 member states. Following the league's dissolution, the institute was re-established in 1940 through a multilateral agreement, the UNIDROIT Statute.
The MoU was signed at UNIDROIT's headquarters in Rome in the presence of Bassam Rady, Egypt’s ambassador to Italy, and Professor Ignacio Tirado, UNIDROIT's secretary-general.
According to an ESC press release, the agreement aims to enhance cooperation in legislative modernization, legal knowledge exchange, and efforts to unify and update laws related to international trade.
Moreover, it will promote collaboration in legal jurisprudence and judicial training to create a more transparent and efficient legal environment in Egypt.
The MoU is part of ESC’s broader efforts to engage with global legal institutions, exchange legislative and judicial expertise, modernize legal frameworks, and improve Egypt’s investment climate.

During the signing ceremony, Judge Aboud highlighted the ESC’s commitment to adopting international best practices and reinforcing the rule of law in alignment with modern legal developments.
Meanwhile, Ambassador Rady emphasized the importance of this step in supporting Egypt’s efforts to modernize its legal system and strengthen international legal collaboration.
For her part, Professor Malaguti underlined the importance of this initiative in developing legislation that facilitates global business and investment stability.
Both sides explored ways to implement the MoU, focusing on joint legal research, workshops, and training programmes for ESC’s judges and legal advisors in international commercial law.
They also considered the technical support that UNIDROIT can offer based on its global legal experience.
Additionally, the two parties agreed to establish a clear work plan with defined goals, timelines, and monitoring mechanisms, with implementation to be coordinated through ESC’s Judicial Studies and Research Centre.
