Al-Azhar grand imam, Pope Leo XIV pledge support for rights of vulnerable, oppressed
Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Sheikh Ahmed El-Tayyeb and Head of the Roman Catholic Church Pope Leo XIV pledged support for the rights of the vulnerable, underprivileged, and oppressed, stressing the urgent need to end ongoing conflicts, particularly in Gaza, Ukraine, and Sudan.
In a statement shared on his official X account, the grand imam of Al-Azhar, the world's leading Muslim Sunni institution, said these remarks came in a phone call with Pope Leo XIV.
During the call, they affirmed the importance of continuing in dialogue and the human fraternity path to promote coexistence and global peace.
Sheikh El-Tayyeb congratulated Pope Leo XIV on his election as head of the Roman Catholic Church.
Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, 69, was elected pope on 8 May and took the papal name Leo XIV, becoming the first US cleric to lead the Roman Catholic Church and its 1.4 billion followers.
