Minister of Foreign Affairs Badr Abdelatty reaffirmed Friday that Egypt’s intensive mediation efforts to restore a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip are ongoing in cooperation with Qatar and the US.

Speaking to Al-Qahera News from the Iraqi capital Baghdad, where the 34th Arab League Summit is set to convene, Abdelatty emphasised that halting the systematic killings in Gaza remains a priority for Egypt.

Abdelatty stressed that Egypt's mediation has not stopped, but the problem lies in one party's blatant violation of international law.

He emphasised that the major problem is the absence of Israel's political will to conclude a ceasefire agreement.

"We are counting on the international community to intensify pressure on Israel to reach a ceasefire agreement and secure the release of the detainees," Abdelatty said.

He added that an international conference will be convened in Cairo for Gaza reconstruction once a ceasefire is reached.

The Egyptian FM emphasised the urgency of delivering humanitarian aid to the Strip amid the famine conditions that exacerbate the suffering of civilians.

"The American side has shown greater degree of understanding regarding the catastrophic conditions in the Gaza Strip," Abdelatty said.

Preliminary session ahead of 34th Arab summit

Abdelatty's remarks came as Arab foreign ministers met in Baghdad for a preliminary session ahead of the summit. The ministers reached a broad consensus on key regional issues, including draft resolutions advocating for the reconstruction of Gaza. They also expressed solidarity with Sudan amid its ongoing crisis.

Addressing the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) crisis, Arab states reaffirmed their strong support for Egypt's historical rights to Nile waters.

On Syria, the ministers also reached a consensus on a draft resolution calling for a political process that includes all factions.

Meanwhile, the draft resolution on Yemen aims to reinforce the authority of the internationally recognised government and ensure the security of maritime navigation through the Red Sea.

Abdelatty highlighted that a recent ceasefire agreement in Yemen is expected to significantly contribute to securing maritime traffic in the Red Sea.

"The global shipping companies are optimistic following the Yemen ceasefire," Abdelatty said.

On Libya, the Egyptian FM said Cairo is closely monitoring the recent escalation with concern and warned about the fragile stability there.

"Without the enforcement of full state control in Libya, sustainable stability cannot be achieved," Abdelatty stressed.

The Arab League Summit on Saturday is expected to draw leaders and top diplomats from across the Arab world.

It is expected to focus heavily on the evolving Palestinian cause and other regional and international conflicts that threaten Arab national security.
