Layali Dalida is a research-based creative project exploring the psychological impact of narcissistic parenting — specifically, the complex emotional aftermath experienced by the child.
At its centre is Dalida, a woman who spent her life idolising her mother, Layali, whom she saw as the embodiment of love, sacrifice, and strength.
Their relationship was obsessive: Dalida lived in her mother’s shadow, constantly seeking approval, internalising her values, and shaping her identity around how Layali saw her.
But everything begins to shift after Layali’s death.
In the quiet that follows, Dalida revisits her memories — and, for the first time, sees them without the emotional filter of reverence. What once felt like loving guidance begins to seem manipulative.
Moments she had cherished now appear cold, even calculated.
Through this painful process, Dalida uncovers a brutal truth: her mother’s love was never unconditional.
She hadn’t nurtured her daughter — she had controlled her. Dalida wasn’t raised but instead managed.
