Egypt's NTRA updates measures against spam callers, warns of permanent ban

The National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA) announced Tuesday a new set of regulatory and technical measures enabling citizens to identify better the identity of callers and deterrent steps against spammers, including a permanent ban on all networks.

The new updates, which aim to enhance transparency, include launching the caller ID service for landlines.

This service lets users know the name of the entity calling when receiving calls from landline numbers, including promotional calls.

This feature helps users decide whether or not to answer the call, a statement by the NTRA said.

The statement confirmed that deterrent measures will be taken against violators, including service suspension across all networks for lines unregistered for promotional calls.

NTRA stressed that it will permanently block any user attempting to resume their actions by registering the violating line or using a new unregistered line to make further nuisance calls from any network within Egypt.

Additionally, subscribers found to be using unregistered lines for illegal promotional calls will be permanently banned from obtaining any new lines in the future, even if they are purchased for personal and not commercial use.

The authority stated that this step continues the regulatory rules it established in July 2024 regarding the regulation of mobile lines used for promotional and commercial calls.

NTRA also said individuals wishing to make such calls must register their data with mobile service providers and activate the service legally.

In October 2024, the NTRA fined the famous real estate company Mountain View EGP 20 million for conducting nuisance telemarketing calls that violated the code and regulatory procedures.

The ruling was the first against telemarketing calls that sparked controversy and anger due to their frequency and volume.
