The icon of the Memory of the City app.
The application showcases the projects the National Organization for Urban Harmony (NOUH) implemented since 2018 to document and safeguard icons of Egypt’s tangible and intangible cultural heritage.
NOUH started the initial project with the efforts of its CEO, Mohamed Abu Saida, in collaboration with Osama El-Gohary, assistant prime minister and head of the Information and Decision Support Centre.
The application, in English and Arabic, comprises six sections.
- The first, “Lived Here,” spots the location, with QR code signs, of over 1,000 renowned Egyptian cultural figures who passed away and marks the places where they used to live. Well-known figures, from iconic singer Om Kolthoum to renowned comedian Ismail Yassin, are well represented, along with mini-biographies. Once you scan the QR code, it leads to a page that contains the story.
- The second, “Street Stories,” marks the location of blue street signs carrying the names of streets in Cairo, the people behind them, and their significance in Egyptian history. You will get to know people whose names have become the addresses of many people.
- The third, “Heritage Buildings,” follows the location of heritage structures. The app follows the signs on historic buildings, including dates and types of architecture, in several districts of Cairo and the City of Port Said.
- The fourth, “Historic Tour,” takes you on a virtual tour, where you would see the historic buildings and cultural icons in Zamalek (the only district with a video tour to watch), Maadi, Heliopolis, Khedive Cairo, and the City of Port Said.
- The fifth, "Signs Near to You,” allows you to take a nice cultural stroll wherever you are.
- The sixth, “Documentary Books,” gives you access to free PDF files of exceptional heritage books NOUH created on Heliopolis, Garden City, Zamalek, and Siwa Oasis.
