Egyptian side Pyramids FC will be aiming to lift their first-ever CAF Champions League trophy when they host South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns in the second leg of the final at Cairo’s Air Defence Stadium on Sunday.

The Emirati-owned club earned a crucial 1-1 draw in last week’s first leg at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria, giving them the edge on away goals.

A goalless draw in Cairo would be enough to seal a historic continental triumph.

Coach Krunoslav Jurčić’s side may be without key players Mostafa Fathi and Nigerian forward Sodiq Awujoola, who both missed the first leg due to injury and remain doubtful for Sunday’s decider.

“We did a good job away from home, and the players deserve credit for their performance,” Jurčić said after the match. “But the job isn’t done yet. That was just the first half – now we have to finish it in Cairo.”

Pyramids, who won their first major silverware last season with the Egypt Cup, have risen rapidly under Croatian tactician Jurčić and are also set to defend their domestic title against Zamalek on June 5.

The Cairo-based side will rely on the attacking duo of Fiston Mayele and Ibrahim Adel, both joint top scorers in the competition with five goals each.

Ramadan Sobhi is expected to return from injury, while Moroccan wing-back Mohamed Chibi is also likely to play a pivotal role.

Sundowns, who last won the competition in 2016, are chasing a second continental title.

Coach Miguel Cardoso’s team wrapped up their eighth consecutive South African Premier Soccer League title with two games to spare, underlining their dominance domestically.
