As part of the World Dance Opening project, the Kostroma Russian National Ballet Company conducted a workshop on Tuesday at the Egyptian Academy of Arts.

The workshop introduced students to Russian theatrical dance while exploring Egyptian folk traditions.

The initiative included a collaborative performance with Egypt’s folklore troupes, culminating in a joint piece titled Round Dance of Friendship.

Egyptian students have also been invited to intern in Russia to deepen the partnership further.

Additionally, trainers from the Reda Troupe will teach Egyptian folkloric dances to Kostroma dancers, while Russian instructors will work with members of Egypt’s Folk Arts and Reda troupes.

The project, announced at the BRICS Heads of State Summit in October 2024, aims to unite BRICS nations through shared cultural values.

It is led by the Kostroma Ballet Company, one of Russia’s newest professional folk dance ensembles.

The BRICS Folk Dance Alliance, established in September 2024 by cultural ministers from member countries, supports it.

Russian Ambassador to Egypt Georgy Borisenko praised the longstanding cultural connections between the countries and highlighted the Soviet legacy in Egyptian dance and ballet.

Khaled Galal, Director of the Production Sector at Egypt’s Ministry of Culture, noted the enduring friendship between the two peoples and the shared goal of exchanging artistic expertise and preserving traditions.

Elena Tsarenko, President and Producer of the Kostroma Ballet Company, detailed the project’s focus on studying folk dance traditions.

The project was previously implemented in China and the UAE, and plans to expand to all BRICS countries.

The company, officially recognized as the National Heritage of Kostroma Region in 2013, performs over 150 solo concerts annually in Russia and abroad, showcasing traditional Russian folk dance.
