Egypt condemns Israeli attack on Iran as dangerous escalation

Egypt condemned on Friday the military attacks that Israel launched on Iran as a blatant and extremely dangerous regional escalation, a flagrant violation of international law and the UN Charter, and a direct threat to regional and global peace and security.

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Egypt follows the unfolding developments with deep concern.

The ministry denounced this unjustified act, which it said would further aggravate the crisis and lead to a broader regional conflict with unprecedented consequences for regional security and stability.

The statement noted that such escalation gravely endangers the resources of the region's peoples and risks plunging the entire region into widespread chaos.

Egypt reiterated its steadfast position that there were no military solutions to the regional crises but only political and peaceful ones.

"The arrogance of power will not bring security to any state in the region, including Israel," the ministry had said in a statement.

Cairo stressed that genuine security can only be achieved through respect for the sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity of states, the realisation of justice, and an end to the Israeli occupation of Arab territories.

Earlier Friday, Israel attacked the Iranian capital, Tehran. The Israeli strikes targeted the country's nuclear programme, killing at least two top military officers.

The Israeli strikes, the most significant attack Iran has faced since its 1980s war with Iraq, came amid rising tensions over Iran's nuclear programme, with Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei warning that "severe punishment" would be directed at Israel.

Israel said Iran had launched drones in an initial response.
