Iraq urges UN Security Council to deter Israeli aggression against Iran

Iraq has called for an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council following Israel’s pre-dawn attacks on Iran, describing the strikes as a “flagrant violation” of international law and a threat to global stability.

In a statement on Friday, the Iraqi government said the Israeli operation represented a breach of the UN Charter and posed a “threat to international peace and security, especially as it occurred during the period of US-Iranian negotiations.”

Baghdad urged the Security Council to take “decisive and concrete measures to deter this aggression, ensure its non-recurrence, and restore the prestige of the international legal system.”

The condemnation follows a coordinated Israeli assault that killed senior Iranian military and nuclear figures and struck the uranium enrichment facility at Natanz.

Among those reported killed were Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps commander Hossein Salami and nuclear scientists Mehdi Tehranchi and Fereydoon Abbasi. Tehran has accused the United States of supporting the strikes, a claim Washington denies.

“Israel will pay a heavy price and should expect a strong response from us. That response will definitely come,” a spokesperson for the Iranian armed forces said Friday.

Iran has already launched 100 drones toward Israel, which the Israeli military said were being intercepted.

Baghdad, which maintains ties with both Tehran and Washington, has long tried to avoid being drawn into regional confrontations. The latest escalation has raised fears of a wider conflict that could quickly spiral beyond Iran and Israel.
