Egypt’s foreign minister, Badr Abdelatty, has condemned Israeli military operations and settler incursions in the occupied West Bank, calling for a political solution that leads to Palestinian statehood under a two-state framework.

The comments came during a call on Monday with the Palestinian prime minister and foreign minister, Mohammad Mustafa, amid ongoing violence in the Gaza Strip and rising regional tensions following Israeli strikes on Iran.

Abdelatty criticized Israel’s use of starvation and collective punishment in Gaza, calling it a violation of international humanitarian law.

He also reiterated support for Palestinian rights and self-determination.

Earlier in the day, Gaza’s civil defence agency said Israeli gunfire killed 20 people and injured 200 others - 50 of whom are in critical condition - who were waiting for aid at a Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) distribution point south of the besieged territory.

Israel has intensified its assault on Gaza with coordinated attacks by land, air, and sea, leaving dozens more dead or wounded, including children.

Abdelatty said Egypt continues to work with Qatar and the US to broker a ceasefire and urgently deliver humanitarian aid.

According to the Palestinian health ministry, Israel has killed 55,432 people—primarily women and children—and injured 128,923 others since it began its war on Gaza in October 2023.

Rising regional tensions

The two ministers also discussed the growing risk of broader conflict in the Middle East following a sharp escalation between Israel and Iran.

Abdelatty warned that the confrontation could destabilize the region and said Egypt was pursuing diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions.

The call followed four consecutive days of cross-border attacks between the two countries, which have left at least 24 Israelis and 227 Iranians dead.

The escalation began on Friday when Israel launched airstrikes on targets in Iran, including nuclear and military sites.

Iran responded by firing missiles at several locations in Israel, including Tel Aviv.
