This occurred during the European Parliament's plenary session in Strasbourg on Wednesday, 18 June.

This followed the European Parliament's approval of a larger package of 7.4 billion euros in macro-financial assistance (MFA) for Egypt in March.

A majority of 386 out of the 567 members who attended the session supported the decision.

In this context, Egyptian Ambassador to the EU Ahmed Abu Zeid noted that the vote concluded nearly nine months of intense discussions across various parliamentary committees.

He also underscored Cairo's sustained engagement in highlighting the multifaceted nature of the Egypt-EU strategic partnership and its contributions to peace and stability in the Middle East and Africa.

The European Council is expected to vote on the decision in the coming days, paving the way for the disbursement of the second tranche.

This tranche is anticipated to enhance Egypt’s economic resilience in the face of growing international and regional challenges and enable the Egyptian government to implement its ambitious developmental and financial programmes.

In January, Egypt received the first tranche of the European Union's 7.4 billion euro ($8 billion) financing package, amounting to 1 billion euros.
