FM Abdelatty spoke with foreign ministers from Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Iraq, and Jordan on Monday in what Egypt described as a joint effort to curb escalation, reduce regional tensions, and coordinate responses to the growing threat of conflict.
The calls came just hours after six Iranian missiles struck Al-Udeid airbase near Doha, home to US Central Command and host to rotating British forces. Iran said the strike was in retaliation for US air raids the previous day on Iranian territory, including nuclear facilities in Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan.
In a readout of the calls, Egypt said Abdelatty expressed Cairo’s solidarity with Qatar and condemned violations of the Gulf state’s sovereignty. A separate statement from the Egyptian foreign ministry described the missile strike as a breach of international law and a threat to regional stability.
The US attacks on Iran came in response to Israeli strikes on Iranian soil earlier this month. The tit-for-tat exchanges have stoked fears of a wider regional conflict, drawing in Gulf states and prompting emergency security measures across the peninsula.
Al-Udeid airbase, located southwest of Doha, serves as the forward headquarters of US Central Command and is a strategic hub for operations across the Middle East.
