The 52-year-old replaces Magdy Abdel-Aaty, who left earlier this month after steering Ittihad to fifth place in the relegation-group mini-league before the Egyptian FA scrapped relegation this term.

“The club has given Samy full authority to select the technical, medical and administrative staff,” the club said in a statement, adding that the new staff will be named “within hours.”

Sami, a former Ahly defender, has managed several top-flight sides, including Talae El-Geish, Nogoom, Tanta, Smouha, and Ceramica Cleopatra.
