The trial is set to take place on 8 July, the Public Prosecution said in a statement on Tuesday.

The decision follows ongoing investigations into the horrific traffic collision that occurred on Friday, resulting in the deaths of 19 young women and leaving three others injured.

The accused driver faces multiple charges, including manslaughter, causing injury by negligence and driving under the influence of cannabis and methamphetamine.

He is also accused of driving against the direction of traffic, without a valid license, and in a manner that endangered public safety.

According to the prosecution’s statement, the driver crossed into the opposite lane in an attempt to overtake another truck, breaching the central divider while under the influence of narcotics.

This reckless act led to a direct collision with a passenger transport vehicle, causing mass casualties and significant damage to public infrastructure and private property, the statement added.

The vehicle's owner is also facing charges, including a misdemeanour for knowingly allowing an unlicensed individual to drive the vehicle, which contributed to the fatal crash.

The prosecution confirmed that evidence gathered during the investigation points to the sole fault of the driver, with no external factors contributing to the incident.

Both defendants remain in custody pending trial.
