US President Donald Trump has sent letters to four Arab nations — Algeria, Iraq, Libya, and Tunisia — this week, informing them they will face higher tariffs beginning 1 August unless they reach new trade agreements with the US.

The letters, published on Trump’s Truth Social platform, outline plans for a 30 percent tariff on imports from Algeria, Iraq, and Libya, and a 25 percent tariff on goods from Tunisia. For Algeria, the 30 percent tariff matches a rate announced in April.

However, Iraq and Libya saw slight reductions from earlier proposed rates, down from 39 percent and 31 percent, respectively. Tunisia’s new rate of 25 percent is also a rollback from the 28 percent proposed in April.

The targeted exports reflect each country’s primary trade with the US: Algeria exports petroleum, cement, and iron products; Iraq sends crude oil and petroleum derivatives; petroleum products dominate Libya’s exports; and Tunisia exports animal and vegetable fats, clothing, and agricultural goods such as fruit and nuts.

While some of these import taxes mirror the "reciprocal" rates Trump unveiled in April—many of which were later postponed—several levies now pledged for next month are higher or lower than those previously announced, indicating some movement in recent negotiations.

In the letters, Trump cautioned countries that they would face even higher tariffs if they retaliated by increasing their own import taxes.
