Arab League Chief welcomes the UN roadmap for a solution in Libya

Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, welcomed the political roadmap presented by Hanna Tetteh, Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), during her briefing to the Security Council on 21 August.

 The roadmap aims to pave the way for unifying Libyan institutions and holding presidential and legislative elections.

Jamal Rushdi, the Spokesperson for the Secretary-General, conveyed Aboul Gheit's support for UN efforts to end the state of division and restore stability. He noted that the proposed roadmap represents an opportunity that all parties must seize to reach a comprehensive political settlement in Libya.

Furthermore, Rushdi highlighted the importance of the UN Mission continuing to coordinate with Libyan parties and regional and international partners to ensure the necessary political and technical support for implementing the roadmap's provisions.

The spokesperson also stressed the importance of ensuring Libyan ownership and leadership of the political process. He indicated the Arab League's commitment to resolving differences between Libyans through dialogue and preserving Libya's unity, independence, and sovereignty.
