On Wednesday, Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly issued a decree designating Thursday, 4 September, as a public paid holiday to celebrate Moulid El-Nabi.
Moulid El-Nabi, which commemorates the birth of the Prophet Muhammad, is observed annually on 12 Rabi‘ Al-Awwal, the third month of the Islamic calendar.
This year, the occasion coincides with 4 September in the Gregorian calendar.
The day is celebrated across the Muslim world with joyful religious and cultural traditions.
In Egypt, sweet shops and bakeries offer traditional confections shaped like horses and dolls to mark the occasion.
