Israeli warplanes hit the top floor of a residential building in southwestern Gaza City, killing 10 people, civil defence spokesman Mahmoud Bassal said in a statement to AFP.

The Israeli helicopters also struck an apartment in the west of the city, killing three and wounding several others, at least three women wounded in the building, he added.

The death toll has risen to 20 since dawn of Tuesday, civil defence did not specify the number of wounded due to the intensity of the Israeli bombing of the area.

Israeli occupation forces have been preparing for an assault to seize and occupy Gaza City, the largest urban centre in the Palestinian territory, intensifying bombardments in the area in recent days and warning of imminent evacuation.

The UN estimates that nearly a million people live in Gaza City and its surroundings, where famine has been declared.

Israel's war on Gaza, which began in October 2023, has killed at least 63,557 Palestinians, most of them children and women, and injured 160,660 others, according to figures from the health ministry in Gaza that the United Nations considers reliable.
