In a statement, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry stressed that this attack constitutes a blatant violation of international humanitarian law, denouncing the targeting of places of worship and innocent civilians in the conflict.

Cairo extended its sincere condolences and sympathy to the families of the victims, as well as to the Sudanese government and people, wishing the injured a speedy recovery.

Egypt also expressed its hope for an end to the conflict in Sudan to protect lives and the resources of the Sudanese people, the ministry said.

On Friday, Sudan's paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) killed 75 people in a drone strike that hit a mosque at a camp for displaced people near Al-Fashir in western Sudan. Al-Fashir has been besieged by the RSF for 18 months. It is the last major city in Darfur that the Sudanese army still controls.

The city's fall would hand the RSF complete territorial dominance over the region, where the UN and rights groups have already reported mass atrocities, including ethnically targeted killings.

On 12 September, Egypt joined Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and the US in a joint call to end the war in Sudan, pressing for a ceasefire, easing the humanitarian crisis, and laying the groundwork for a peaceful political settlement.

Since April 2023, the Sudanese army has been locked in a devastating war with the RSF.

The war in Sudan, now in its third year, has devastated the country, killing tens of thousands, displacing more than 15 million people, and creating what the UN describes as the world's most significant displacement and hunger crises.
