Egyptian East Port Said (EPS) port has climbed seven places in two years to rank third worldwide and first in the region in the World Bank’s 2024 Container Port Performance Index (CPPI), up from 10th place in 2022.

The achievement highlights EPS port’s transformation into one of the world’s most efficient and competitive container hubs, according to the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZone).

In a statement on Tuesday, SCZone described the ranking as “a new accomplishment added to Egypt’s record of successes in global container trade.”

The CPPI evaluates port efficiency based on factors such as vessel turnaround time, cargo handling productivity, infrastructure quality, digitalization, and integration with wider transport and logistics networks.

According to the 2024 report, the EPS port was among the most improved globally between 2020 and 2024.

Its rise from 10th to 3rd place was driven by strategic investments and reforms, including terminal expansions, adoption of digital port community systems, and improved vessel scheduling, which reduced waiting times and boosted operational efficiency.

SCZONE also announced that a major expansion is underway at the SCCT terminal in EPS port. The project will increase annual handling capacity by 2.1 million containers, raising total capacity to 6.6 million Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEUs).

This is expected to further strengthen the EPS port’s global standing in the years to come, the authority said.

SCZone Chairman Walid Gamal El-Din credited the achievement to President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi’s support, noting that it reflects Egypt’s growing role as a regional hub for trade and logistics.

“This milestone is the fruit of close cooperation with our success partners across state institutions and international companies that trusted the business climate in SCZone,” Gamal El-Din said.

He also acknowledged the Suez Canal Authority and the Suez Canal Container Terminal (SCCT), operated by AP Moller-Maersk, whose investments and expertise have been key to expanding capacity and upgrading infrastructure.

The CPPI, compiled annually by the World Bank, ranks over 350 container ports worldwide based on efficiency.

Located at the northern entrance of the Suez Canal, the EPS port has steadily grown into one of Egypt’s most strategic maritime assets since its inauguration in 2004.

Positioned on major east–west shipping routes, it was developed as a transhipment hub to serve mega-ships passing through the Mediterranean and the Suez Canal.
