Egypt backs stronger role for Pan-African Parliament

Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs Badr Abdelatty stated in a meeting on Wednesday with Fortune Charumbira, President of the Pan-African Parliament, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, that Egypt backs a stronger role for the Pan-African Parliament.

He also discussed ways to enhance cooperation with African Union institutions and expand inter-parliamentary coordination.

Abdelatty praised the pivotal role the Pan-African Parliament plays in advancing African causes and strengthening continental cooperation. He affirmed Egypt’s full support for developing the body’s role in representing African peoples and unifying positions on regional and international challenges.

The talks also addressed mechanisms to strengthen cooperation between Egypt’s parliament and the Pan-African Parliament, including closer direct engagement and the exchange of parliamentary expertise, in support of the African Union’s Agenda 2063.

Both sides agreed that such efforts are essential to bolstering peace, security, and sustainable development across the continent.

Meeting with Tanzanian counterpart
 

Abdelatty also met on Wednesday with Tanzanian Foreign Minister Mahmoud Thabit Kombo on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly to explore ways of strengthening bilateral relations across multiple sectors.

The Egyptian FM highlighted the historic ties between the two nations and underscored Egypt’s commitment, under President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi’s directives, to deepening cooperation. He noted the growing Egyptian business interest in Tanzania, highlighting the rising number of Egyptian companies operating there.

He called for practical steps to expand trade, including opening Egyptian bank branches, establishing a direct maritime route, and accelerating the launch of an Egyptian logistics zone in Tanzania.

Abdelatty also emphasised that the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project represents a model of African cooperation in renewable energy. He reaffirmed Egypt’s support for development across the Nile Basin, emphasising consensus as the key to ensuring shared benefits.

The Egyptian FM further invited Kombo to attend the upcoming Aswan Forum for Sustainable Peace and Development, which Abdelatty described as a vital African platform linking peace, security, and development.

Both sides also welcomed their close coordination in international forums, with Abdelatty praising Tanzania’s support for Egypt’s candidate for UNESCO Director-General Khaled El-Enany.
