Al-Azhar Observatory for Combating Extremism warned on Sunday of the grave consequences of Israel pushing through legislation that allows the execution of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails.

Al-Azhar Observatory's warning came after the Knesset's National Security Committee resumed discussions of the so-called "death penalty for terrorists" bill, which sanctions executing Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails.

The statement further stressed that Israel's ongoing violations against Palestinian detainees constitute a humanitarian crime and a blatant breach of international law.

The draft bill had previously been rejected several times due to concerns it would endanger the safety of Israeli captives in Gaza and undermine efforts to secure their release.

According to the Palestinian Commission of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs, the total number of prisoners and detainees in Israeli jails has risen to over 11,000; the highest figure since the outbreak of the Second Intifada in 2000.

The total number of prisoners, most of whom are administrative detainees or those held without trial, does not include individuals held in military camps of Israeli forces.

The Commission has accused Israel of detaining hundreds of Palestinian children in facilities lacking minimum humanitarian standards, which it said reflects a systematic policy aimed at destroying the future of Palestinian children.

It also highlighted the deliberate medical neglect, deprivation of healthcare, and starvation policies imposed on Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails.
