Egypt’s Nations Cup opponent Angola have appointed Frenchman Patrice Beaumelle as head coach, replacing Portuguese manager Pedro Gonçalves, who was sacked last week following a string of poor results.

Gonçalves had been in charge since August 2019 but was dismissed after Angola’s early exit from the African Nations Championship (CHAN) and their faltering World Cup qualifying campaign.

The Palancas Negras were eliminated in the CHAN group stage and sit fourth in Group D of the African World Cup qualifiers, nine points adrift of leaders Cape Verde with two matches remaining.

Beaumelle, 47, is familiar with Angolan football, having served as assistant to Hervé Renard during a brief spell with the national team in 2010. He also worked under Renard with Zambia and Ivory Coast, before taking over as Ivory Coast head coach from 2020 to 2022.

His most recent role was at Qatari club Umm Salal, where he spent six months.

Beaumelle has signed a two-year contract with the Angolan Football Federation.

His immediate task will be preparing the team for the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations, where Angola are drawn in the same group as Egypt, South Africa and Zimbabwe.
