Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly confirmed the date as an official paid holiday, marking Egypt’s victory in the 6 October 1973 war against Israel, which ended Israel’s occupation of the Sinai Peninsula.

Later, the Egypt-Israel peace treaty was signed in 1979 in Washington by late Egyptian President Anwar El-Sadat and then-Prime Minister of Israel Menachem Begin, following the 1978 Camp David Accords.

The annual commemoration, which falls on 6 October, has been moved to Thursday in line with the government’s practice of shifting midweek holidays to the end of the week for longer weekends.

The holiday applies to employees in ministries, state institutions, public sector companies, and government-owned enterprises.

This year marks the 52nd anniversary of Egypt’s military victory.
