The announcement, scheduled for 2pm local time, will follow a meeting of the NEA board, chaired by Judge Hazem Badawi, to review final preparations.

The current House of Representatives, dominated by the pro-government Nation’s Future Party, was elected in late 2020 for a five-year term that expires in January 2026.

Under the constitution, elections for a new chamber must be held within 60 days before the end of the current term.

The vote will take place under legal amendments passed in May.

The 596-member chamber will include 568 elected MPs split evenly between individual candidates (284) and closed lists (284), with the president appointing an additional 28 members. A quarter of the seats are reserved for women.

The distribution for the list seats has been adjusted: Two of the four list districts will now have 40 seats each, down from 42 seats each, while the other two will have 102 seats each, up from 100 seats each.

Candidate lists must also meet strict quotas, including at least twenty women, three Christians, youth, three people with disabilities, two farmers or workers, and one Egyptian expatriate.

The NEA announcement comes weeks after elections for Egypt’s Senate, the 300-member upper chamber, which is due to hold its first session on Thursday following a decree by President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi.
