A senior Hamas official said on Saturday that Egypt will host a conference for Palestinian factions to discuss unity and the post-war administration of the Gaza Strip, after the group agreed to release captives under US President Donald Trump's plan.

The official told AFP that Cairo will organize “an intra-Palestinian dialogue on Palestinian unity and the future of Gaza, including the administration of the Gaza Strip.”

This follows a statement by a senior Egyptian source to Al Qahera News on Friday, which revealed that Cairo was preparing to host a comprehensive Palestinian dialogue on Gaza’s future, alongside efforts to create conditions for a prisoner exchange between Palestinian factions and Israel.

Earlier on Friday, Hamas stated it would release Israeli captives and hand over the governance of Gaza to an independent Palestinian body in response to US President Donald Trump's plan to end the Gaza war.

The Trump plan stipulated an immediate halt to fighting and the release of at least 20 Israeli captives within 72 hours in exchange for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners.

In its statement, Hamas insisted that questions related to the future of Gaza and inalienable rights of the Palestinian people must be settled through a comprehensive Palestinian national dialogue.

In a Truth Social post, Trump said Hamas’ response showed the group was “ready for peace” and urged Israel to “immediately stop the bombing of Gaza, so that we can get the hostages out safely and quickly.”

The Egyptian foreign ministry, meanwhile, reaffirmed Cairo’s “determination to exert the utmost effort to reach a permanent ceasefire, alleviate the suffering of the Palestinian people, and advance the reconstruction of Gaza.”

Egypt, Qatar, and the United States have been leading mediation efforts since the outbreak of Israel's genocidal war on Gaza in October 2023.
