The new Public Prosecution building in New Cairo
The prosecution instructed security authorities to swiftly conduct investigations to uncover the circumstances of the incident.
It has also ordered the summoning of all personnel responsible for securing the tomb of Khenti Ka, along with officials from the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, for questioning.
Surveillance footage from around the tomb is to be seized and reviewed, with a detailed report to be submitted.
In a press statement, the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities confirmed the incident, noting that all necessary legal measures have been taken and that the entire case has been referred to the Public Prosecution for investigation.
Mohamed Ismail Khaled, Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, explained that the tomb had been completely sealed and used as a storage space for antiquities since its discovery in the 1950s.
It had not been opened since 2019. He added that upon learning of the incident, a committee headed by Amr Al-Tayebi, supervisor of the Saqqara archaeological area, was formed to inventory the tomb’s contents.
Following the committee’s report, the matter was immediately referred to the Public Prosecution on the same day.
Khaled affirmed that the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities is closely monitoring the investigation's progress, in coordination with relevant authorities, to safeguard Egypt’s archaeological heritage and ensure its protection from any violations or unlawful practices.
