El-Scenarist podcast, 1st in Arab World, kicks off with Egyptian Mariam Naoum

A new podcast titled El-Scenarist, the first of its kind in the Arab World, hosted by Wael Hamdy, launched on Friday with the episode featuring acclaimed Egyptian screenwriter Mariam Naoum.

El-Scenarist provides direct conversations with the writers behind film and drama productions. revealing hidden truths, exploring the joys and challenges of the craft, and delving into the sparks of genius behind storytelling.

Over the past two decades, Naoum, one of the most influential writers in contemporary Egyptian drama. has penned more than 30 works, many of which explore profound social and emotional themes. Her stories deeply resonate with audiences by addressing real-life struggles, cultural issues, and the complexities of human relationships.

Early in her career, she wrote two films: Wahed Seft (2009) and Ithaki (2005).

She later established her reputation with some of Egypt’s most iconic TV series, including Zaat (A Girl Named Zaat, 2013), adapted from Sonallah Ibrahim’s 1998 novel; Segn El-Nesa (Women’s Prison, 2014), inspired by feminist playwright Fathiya El-Assal’s 1982 play; and Taht El-Saytara (Under the Influence, 2015), the product of Naoum’s three-year research into drug addiction and its impact on individuals and families.

Her other notable works include Wahat El-Ghoroub (Sunset Oasis, 2017), adapted from Bahaa Taher’s novel; Khaly Balak Men Zizi (Watch Out for Zizi, 2021), which addresses mental health and ADHD; and Lam Shamseya (2025), which explores child abuse and societal denial.

These and many other works have left a lasting mark on Egyptian culture, continuing to engage audiences long after their initial release — with many returning to them on streaming platforms years later.


 

Wael Hamdy, a veteran screenwriter, brings over 25 years of experience to the podcast.

His career includes supervising the writing team for Alam Simsim (the Arabic version of Sesame Street, launched in 2000), a true nostalgia trip for many, as it brought timeless stories to life. He has also worked on a diverse portfolio of impactful Egyptian films and dramas, including 6 Ayam (2007), Hepta (2016), Baba Geih (2017), Al-Tofan (2017), and Moga Hara (2018), among others.

Hamdy collaborated with Naoum on several works, including the TV series Sokoot Hor (2015) and Nemra Etneen (2012), showcasing their strong chemistry in writing.

The first season of El-Scenarist will feature ten episodes, showcasing a stellar lineup of other writers who have shaped the Arab screen, including Salah El-Goheny, Amr Samir Atef, Sherif Naguib, Mohamed Ragaa, Mohamed Abia, Maha El Wazir, Mohamed Ismail Amin, Hesham Hilal, and Amr El-Daly.

With ten episodes planned and a strong possibility of a second season, El-Scenarist promises to be a groundbreaking platform for drama and cinema fans eager to discover how stories move from page to screen and the challenges faced along the way.
