Egypt’s Public Prosecution has ordered the release of 38 individuals held in pretrial detention as part of its ongoing review of detainee cases across the country.

The prosecution stated on Monday that the decision, issued on 6 October by the First Public Attorney of the Supreme State Security Prosecution, follows directives from Prosecutor General Mohamed Shawky for all prosecution offices to periodically reassess the legal status of detainees held pending investigation.

The prosecution said the move reflects its commitment to upholding justice “not only through the accountability of offenders, but also by supporting the rehabilitation and reintegration of released individuals into society,” in line with Egypt’s broader approach to promoting human rights and freedoms.

Since the reactivation of the Presidential Pardon Committee in April 2022, hundreds of pretrial detainees have been released following recommendations from the prosecution.

The committee reviews appeals submitted by the National Council for Human Rights (NCHR), parliament’s Human Rights Committee, and political parties, as well as requests submitted through its official website.
