“We call on mediators to pressure the occupation to adhere to what was agreed,” the spokesperson said. “The agreement, as we understand from mediators, is a beginning to ending the genocidal war on Gaza.”
The Hamas statements to Al Jazeera came as Israel announced on Thursday that it would not withdraw or implement a ceasefire in its war on Gaza until the Israeli cabinet officially approves the agreement.
The spokesperson emphasised that Hamas is prepared to implement the first phase of the agreement and is “exerting every effort to make the agreement succeed and end the war.” While discussing the difficulties related to handing over captives’ bodies, he told mediators, “If the field conditions allow, all captives can be handed over at once.”
The spokesperson further reiterated Hamas’s support for a national Palestinian dialogue, saying, “We support holding a national Palestinian dialogue with all parties to manage the resistance.”
On disarmament, he stated, “The weapon of resistance is legitimate to defend our people and ensure the independence of Palestinian decision-making,” adding that discussions with mediators are focused on a ceasefire, “but not on the basis of disarming the resistance.”
Regarding governance, the spokesperson clarified that Hamas would not participate in governing Gaza, stating, “We have shown all necessary flexibility in this regard,” but reiterated the movement’s commitment to fulfilling its national, ethical, and political responsibilities to its people.
